Different broadcast frequencies are available for pingers, allowing multiple to be deployed in the same geographic region without interfering with one another. The diver tunes his pinger receiver to the targeted pinger's frequency, and the receiver directs him directly to it. These low-frequency acoustic pingers have a range of 3 to 6 miles, whereas ordinary mid-frequency (30 to 40 kHz) pingers have a range of several thousand feet.

The operator may adjust the number of pulses per second, the duration of each pulse, and the output power for the acoustic pingers manufactured by Fishers. The operator is able to vary the distance at which pingers can be detected by altering the pulse duration and output strength. Before deployment, the operator can choose the transmission frequency for the MLFP-1. These characteristics render the pingers very adaptable and the best option for practically any application.

Optional PC Software enables the user of a laptop to fine-tune the variable parameters, including the selection of delayed start (from a minute to a 365-day delay start). The pingers are powered by regular alkaline batteries that, depending on output power and pulse selection, last from a few weeks to several months. Extended Functioning Life housing and Very Long Duration housing (hold more batteries) are available, which greatly prolong the operating time.
